Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner (1982) is based on Philip K Dick’s 1968 dystopian science-fiction novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? While the film didn’t do well at the box office, it set the visual palette for the cyberpunk subgenre of sci-fi. A complex plot and bleak, mysterious setting was why Blade Runner didn’t enjoy commercial success. It was also the era of space-opera franchise movies like Star Wars and Star Trek.
