Giacomo Casanova is the prisoner of his legend. The Casanova of popular culture is a necromancer, a charlatan, a decadent hedonist who womanized and swindled his way across Enlightenment Europe. But the Casanova who talked with popes, walked with monarchs, held his own with the likes of Voltaire and Benjamin Franklin and obliged Mozart by adding a last-minute polish to Lorenzo Da Ponte’s libretto for Don Giovanni, hardly measures up to the dilettante image that has been foisted on him.
