What a clever device the book is. It is compact and light, yet contains hundreds of pages that hold an incredible amount of information. Still, the object is useless if the information it contains cannot be found. One tool for finding a specific book goes back to medieval times: title and author information displayed on the spine and dust jacket. How did the outside of the medieval manuscript communicate what was hidden inside?
