Hughes (1902-1967) disliked writing letters. He was the busiest of busy writers, and correspondence got in the way of his real work: poems, novels, short stories, memoirs, children’s books, plays, translations, opera librettos, anthologies, newspaper columns. Yet he often sat down late at night and banged out as many as 30 letters at a time, so many that his complete correspondence could fill nearly 20 volumes.
