I worked on David Attenborough’s documentary. The grim reality gave me climate anxiety | Liv Grant

We live in a time of loss. Wild places dwindle, the animals and plants that live in them disappear. Climate change is now a certainty, and it will without a doubt lead to the loss of land, species, and ways of life. In the abstract this is disconcerting. Up close it is devastating. I worked on the BBC’s Climate Change: The Facts, presented by David Attenborough, and have felt this pain first-hand.

How Sexism and Machismo Shaped the Iowa Writers’ Workshop

In March 2016, the literary organization VIDA published a series of anonymous statements that accused the poet Thomas Sayers Ellis of predatory and abusive behavior. The collected accounts allege unwanted advances, mockery, physical violence, and threats to ruin women’s careers over several years. Fifty-two years old at the time and widely respected in the field, in January that year Ellis had been appointed a visiting professor at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Soon after VIDA published these voices, Ellis’s classes were canceled, and a university official confirmed they were “looking into the situation.”

‘Mr. Robot’ Creator Sam Esmail Says Series Will End In Season-Long “Christmas Special’

Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail unwrapped only one big reveal about the coming final season of his series, which is known for tense action and psychological twists and turns. “Is anybody here a fan of British television?” he asked a packed Tribeca Talks crowd at the Tribeca Film Festival. He then offered a gift he hopes will keep on giving. “Typically how [British shows] wrap up series, like the British [version of The] Office, you tend to do a Christmas special. So the final season of Mr. Robot is one very long Christmas special that will last about a week over Christmas of 2015,” Esmail said.

'A Clockwork Orange' Follow-Up Found in Burgess Archives

'A Clockwork Orange' Follow-Up Found in Burgess Archives

A literature professor at Manchester Metropolitan University recently unearthed a legendary manuscript: a 200-page work titled The Clockwork Condition by A Clockwork Orange’s Anthony Burgess. Don’t get too excited, Droog lovers. Colin Dwyer at NPR reports that Condition is not a sequel to the cult novel, but rather a meditation on the “condition of modern man” that was to be structured similarly to Dante’s Inferno. The manuscript was also something of a cash grab. After the release and success of Stanley Kubrick’s film version of book in 1971, a publisher reached out to Burgess...

The drama club only had enough money to put the production on for two nights in March, but the director of the film, Ridley Scott, ponied up $5,000 after the performance went viral.

'Chernobyl' Review: HBO’s Haunting Miniseries Will Emotionally Destroy You

What you need to know about Chernobyl, HBO’s 5-episode miniseries from Craig Mazin, is that you cannot understand how deeply it will destroy the very fabric of your being until you see it. Which is, strangely, analogous to the fallout from the meltdown of Chernobyl reactor #4. As it was happening, and in its immediate aftermath, no one understood what it meant. “You are dealing with something that has never happened on this planet before!” says scientist Valery Legasov (Jared Harris) when attempting to impress upon the Kremlin the unknowable scope of the event, which took place in April of 1986.

5 Minutes That Will Make You Love the Piano

Last fall, we asked our writers and editors, and some of our favorite artists, to select the five minutes or so they’d play for friends to make them fall in love with classical music. (See the picks.) Choosing was hard, but we loved it so much that we’re bringing it back — this month, with the goal of persuading those same curious friends to love the piano, the most powerful and protean of instruments. We know you’ll make memorable discoveries, and we hope you enjoy.

For years, “cord cutting” — dropping your cable television package and watching video content only over the internet — has been discussed as a strategy for saving money. George R.R. Martin wishes Game of Thrones had “a few more seasons”

Game of Thrones is ending, which has to be a little weird for George R.R. Martin, who wrote the still-unfinished novel series on which the show is based. 'The Lost Gutenberg' Traces One Bible's 500-Year Journey

'The Lost Gutenberg' Traces One Bible's 500-Year Journey

One of the first things I did when I moved to Austin a decade ago was visit the Gutenberg Bible housed in the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas. As a bibliophile, the importance of that book was not lost on me. However, the impact of Johannes Gutenberg's surviving bibles as cultural treasures and book collectors' dreams was something I ignored. That is no longer the case. Margaret Leslie Davis' The Lost Gutenberg, which traces one Bible's 500-year journey, is an informative, superbly researched book that explores the lives of those who were in contact with the best example of Gutenberg's work.

But in the evening, when Dr Katherine Rundell wants a bit of comfort, she reads Paddington. “As an adult, the thing I love about Paddington is that the structure Michael Bond has built into his books is one of hope. Things which appear to be negative turn out to be just cogs in the greater machine. I think Bond sees life as miraculous – and that’s in the structure of the book.”
