David Mitchell buries latest manuscript for a hundred years

Mitchell is the second contributor to the Scottish artist Katie Paterson’s Future Library project, for which 1,000 trees were planted two years ago in Oslo’s Nordmarka forest. Starting with Margaret Atwood, who last year handed over the manuscript of a text called Scribbler Moon, each year for the next 100 years an author will deliver a piece of writing which will only be read in 2114, when the trees are chopped down to make paper on which the 100 texts will be printed.

Mexican footballer Alan Pulido has been kidnapped in the northern border state of Tamaulipas, officials say. The 25-year-old striker was reportedly kidnapped on Sunday near his home in Ciudad Victoria after leaving a party. He plays for the Greek team Olympiakos and has made several appearances for Mexico's national team. Mexico has the one of the world's highest kidnapping rates, with government figures saying some 1,000 people are taken every year.

Eighty years on, Spain may at last be able to confront the ghosts of civil war

Following the end of the Spanish civil war in 1939, the bodies of 1,700 Republicans –soldiers, civilians, people caught in the wrong place at the wrong time – were carted through the centre of Barcelona and dumped here without dignity or ceremony, after summary execution by the fascist forces of General Francisco Franco. Their bullet-ridden corpses were covered in quicklime before being thrown into a pit, the better to ensure their rapid decomposition. In a grim example of fascist humour, the medical certificates of many of the dead reported the cause of death as “internal haemorrage”.

‘Glee’ Star Mark Salling Indicted for Child Pornography

Mark Salling, who played Puck on “Glee,” was indicted on Friday for possessing child pornography, Variety has learned. Salling was indicted on two counts of child porn, and charged with receiving and possessing child pornography on his laptop and a USB flash drive. “Those who download and possess child pornography create a market that causes more children to be harmed,” United States Attorney Eileen M. Decker said in a statement.

'Saved by the Bell' star back in jail

Actor Dustin Diamond, best known for playing the role of Screech on the 1990s high school comedy "Saved by the Bell," has been arrested in Ozaukee, Wisconsin on a probation hold, according to the Ozaukee County Jail. Diamond was sentenced to four months in jail for stabbing a man during a Christmas Day 2014 altercation at a bar in Wisconsin. He served three months of the sentence. A probation hold occurs when the offender's probation agent believes he or she has not complied with the terms of their probation.
