A rare interview with Don DeLillo, one of the titans of American fiction

If you want to reach Don DeLillo, don't try to email him; he doesn't email. His preferred method of business communication is via fax. He still writes his novels on a typewriter. That technological reticence notwithstanding, DeLillo is one of the titans of American fiction. The 79-year-old DeLillo is the author of 18 novels, including the National Book Award-winning "White Noise" and the acclaimed bestsellers "Underworld" and "Libra."

The Cable Industry Threatens To Sue If FCC Tries To Bring Competition To Cable Set Top Boxes

The Cable Industry Threatens To Sue If FCC Tries To Bring Competition To Cable Set Top Boxes

Back in February the FCC voted on a new plan to open up the traditional cable box to competition. According to a fact sheet being circulated by the agency (pdf), under the FCC's plan you'd still pay your cable company for the exact same content, cable operators would simply have to design systems -- using standards and copy protection of their choice -- that delivered this content to third-party hardware. The FCC's goal is cheaper, better hardware and a shift away...

The Secrets of Medieval Fonts

The Secrets of Medieval Fonts

One of the fundamental things in a medieval book is letters. Each one of us human beings writes differently, and considering that medieval books were made before the invention of print, it follows that the scripts they carry show a great variety in execution styles. This is perhaps the most amazing experience of spending a day going through a pile of medieval books in the library: the immense variation in the manner in which the text is written on the parchment pages.

Inside stories from a prison book group

Inside stories from a prison book group

The the crucial roles that libraries play in a community seem especially clear here in the library at HMP Thameside. Prison rules – to which all UK prisons must adhere – state that every prisoner is entitled to 30 minutes of library browsing time at least once a fortnight. Browsing, however, seems to be the least of it: this library isn’t so much a place of silent, solitary shelf-scanning as a place where books bring people together.

This sustainable ‘leather’ comes from kombucha tea

A sustainable film made from a byproduct of kombucha tea could be a new material for clothing, shoes, or handbags. The gel-like film, grown by a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast, feeds on a mixture of vinegar and sugar. Young-A Lee, an associate professor of apparel, merchandising, and design at Iowa State, says the properties of this SCOBY film are similar to leather once it’s harvested and dried, and can be used to make clothing, shoes, or handbags.

She died in February or March 1945, at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp where was she held, shortly before it was liberated. Since the applicable term of copyright in the EU is 70 years after the death of a writer, this means that her famous diary should now be in the public domain.

The Last Word On Nothing | Shakespeare Was a Journalist

The Last Word On Nothing | Shakespeare Was a Journalist

This past Saturday, the world celebrated the birthday of a guy named William Shakespeare. He was born in Stratford-on-Avon in England on April 23, 1564, and died on or about the same date in 1616. Pretty much every reputable Shakespeare scholar and literary historian argues—based on historical evidence—that this William Shakespeare was the author, alone or in collaboration, of the plays we know today. But since at least the mid-1800s, a few of those who love Shakespeare’s plays have...

Weeding the Worst Library Books

Last summer, in Berkeley, California, librarians pulled roughly forty thousand books off the shelves of the public library and carted them away. The library’s director, Jeff Scott, announced that his staff had “deaccessioned” texts that weren’t regularly checked out. But the protesters who gathered on the library’s front steps to decry what became known as “Librarygate” preferred a different term: “purged.”

The Genius of Birds

All birds vocalize. They hoot, yodel, caw, wail, rattle, chit, seet, and sing like angels. They call to warn of predators and to identify family, friends, and foes. They sing to defend their territory—to stake it out or fence it in—and to woo a mate. But singing is something special. An excerpt from Jennifer Ackerman’s book, "Genius of Birds."
