New Book Reveals Edward R. Murrow's Years As a Government Propagandist

New Book Reveals Edward R. Murrow's Years As a Government Propagandist

Today, Edward R. Murrow’s name is synonymous with integrity in journalism. He reported from the frontlines during World War II and took on Joe McCarthy’s communist witchhunt in the 1950s. But what’s less well known to Americans today is his role as the country’s leading propagandist in the early 1960s. A new book by Gregory M. Tomlin called Murrow’s Cold War: Public Diplomacy for the Kennedy Administration seeks to remedy that.

Kit Harington discusses dual edged swords of sexism in Hollywood. "I like to think of myself as more than a head of hair or a set of looks. It’s demeaning. Yes, in some ways you could argue I’ve been employed for a look I have. But there’s a sexism that happens towards men."

Is Exclusion Still the Norm? Saudi Arabia and Women in the Olympic Games

After considerable international pressure, Saudi Arabia agreed to send two female athletes to the London 2012 Games–the first time in history the nation sent female athletes to the games. Qatar and Brunei’s female athletes at the London Games were also the first female members in the history of their Olympic participation, but in both of those countries, the policies restricting women in sports are significantly less harsh.

David Mitchell buries latest manuscript for a hundred years

Mitchell is the second contributor to the Scottish artist Katie Paterson’s Future Library project, for which 1,000 trees were planted two years ago in Oslo’s Nordmarka forest. Starting with Margaret Atwood, who last year handed over the manuscript of a text called Scribbler Moon, each year for the next 100 years an author will deliver a piece of writing which will only be read in 2114, when the trees are chopped down to make paper on which the 100 texts will be printed.

"Gluten Exposed" Is a Nuanced Take on Nutritional Science. So People Probably Won’t Read It.

"Gluten Exposed" is a non-revolutionary, non-miracle-promising book of genuine science by Dr. Peter Green, director of Columbia University’s Celiac Disease Center, and medical writer Rory Jones. It comes on the heels of such best-sellers as "Wheat Belly" and "Grain Brain"—and for people who have learned about gluten from these titles, it will be somewhat perplexing. "Gluten Exposed" contains no stories about astonishing autism reversals. No promises of Alzheimer’s prevention. No weight-loss secrets the establishment doesn’t want you to know. Dr. Oz has not endorsed it. There aren’t even recipes in the back!

Eighty years on, Spain may at last be able to confront the ghosts of civil war

Eighty years on, Spain may at last be able to confront the ghosts of civil war

Following the end of the Spanish civil war in 1939, the bodies of 1,700 Republicans –soldiers, civilians, people caught in the wrong place at the wrong time – were carted through the centre of Barcelona and dumped here without dignity or ceremony, after summary execution by the fascist forces of General Francisco Franco. Their bullet-ridden corpses were covered in quicklime before being thrown into a pit, the better to ensure their rapid decomposition. In a grim example of fascist humour, the medical certificates of many of the dead reported the cause of death as “internal haemorrage”.

A Poet Unlike Any Other

A Poet Unlike Any Other

Forty-five years after her death, Stevie Smith can be celebrated as a major English poet of the twentieth century. She is a writer of astonishing skill, range, comedy, and depth of feeling; she is inimitable, strange, and utterly original. With her poetry collected as a whole, it becomes more apparent too that though she is a funny writer—funny-ha-ha and funny-peculiar—her work is melancholy and despairing, full of pain, terror, and grief. By Hermione Lee.

Can’t judge a book by its cover? Perhaps you can!

If you look at how museums choose to digitally engage with their audiences, especially in the past few years, it is evident that 3D technologies have become standard practice within their larger digital outreach. In contrast, libraries are perceived to hold books, manuscripts, documents, or in short – compilations of two-dimensional text. Yet nothing physical that a library holds is in fact two-dimensional, and some items kept in libraries may be of unanticipated nature. Libraries have more potential to engage with 3D modelling and printing than one would expect.
